Print of Padlocks on Bridge in Paris

Key to Your Heart - The Custom of Locking padlocks on bridges

And so that we would never part
I'd lock my love inside it, then take the key and hide it
If I had the key to the door of your heart.
Poem by Kenneth T. Schofield

Have you ever wondered why people place locks on gates in public places? Apparently, we have been inspired by an ancient custom, which is believed to have originated in China – where lovers lock a padlock on a chain or gate and then throw away the key, symbolically locking their love forever. Around the world, cities from Moscow to Rome are filled with fences, bridges, and poles adorned with padlocks. I took the original photo in Paris and turned it into a vintage-looking print which is available from my website.
